July 13, 2009 • Laura Wasilowski
A PowerPoint guided tour of ―The Chicago School of Fusing, showing her own work and that of other CSOF ―faculty members. This mythological university is devoted to the promotion of the fine art of fusing, a non-traditional method of assembling quilts with fusible web. There are only two prerequisites to take classes at this university. You have to own an iron and be able to find Chicago on a map. Meeting those two requirements the school will take everybody from the timid to the overbearing and for those who get glue all over their irons there is also the Remedial School of Fusing. The campus tour may also include the Tomb of the Unknown Sewer. Laura is a textile artist, author, teacher, creator of hand-dyed fabrics and threads, and one of the most entertaining speakers traveling the quilt circuit. She has a playful sense of humor and a smile that shows off her dimples. She has an under-graduate degree in Costuming from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN and a Master of Art degree in Fiber from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL. Laura combines vivid fabrics to make pictorial art quilts based on the whimsical stories of family, home and friends. She has a series of small quilts called Colleen’s Calling Birds, Betty’s Bloomers (her sisters) and the Housing Department quilts. Each wall piece is her own design of fused appliqué, hand stitched and machine quilted. Her new book is titled Fuse and Tell. A trunk show of fused art quilts, hand dyed fabrics and threads from ARTFABRIK dyers are included in the program. Laura will also do two different workshops. The workshop on Sunday, July 12 is titled Object Lesson. Woodcuts will be presented on Monday before our evening meeting. Both classes filled quickly and we have names already on the waiting list.

August 10, 2009 • Denise Labadie: “ Irish Landscapes"
Denise’s quilts are most typically images of Irish megalithic stones and landscapes —a theme that is central to her quilting. She custom hand paints and quilts each stone to achieve the most realistic look possible. Her abstract landscapes use the tones and hues common to Irish vistas.
